Paulíková, Veronika ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee)
The immigration has became the main topic in many western countries during several past years. This thesis focuses on immigration policy of the United Kingdom, where immigration represents 12,5 % of the whole population. Namely it deals with immigration policy during the premiership of David Cameron in the years 2010 to 2015. This topic is relatively recent, therefore has not been sufficiently explored. Moreover, attention is usually focused on integration policy; as a consequence thesis should contribute to mapping of actual immigration policy in the United Kingdom. This thesis examines which specific changes in immigration policy have been introduced by the government of David Cameron. Immigration policy is analyzed on base of the new Immigration Act and other documents which amended new law, then on the reforms of visa policy. The main objective of the analysis is to map immigration policy of David Cameron and reveal the specific steps taken by the government. The thesis also examines whether the development of immigration policy changes are applied to all immigrants from non-EU countries, or only to a certain type of immigrants. It also rates the achievement of stated goals of the Conservative Party.
Characteristic stance of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in EU illustrated on the example of British rebate
Brožová, Lucie ; Rovná, Lenka (advisor) ; Urban, Luděk (referee)
This thesis deals with the problem of British attitude towards European integration. The relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union is described via the existence of a phenomenon of British European budget rebate. The budget rebate is a British reduction in price of the cost of contribution annually sent to the common European Union's budget. It was won by the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in Fontainebleau Summit in 1984. The main reason for giving Great Britain this privilege was the fact that the UK was one of the biggest net contributor to the budget. On the other hand, the UK received too little from the budget because it had only a small agricultural sector. The European budget was aimed primarily for subsidising the European farmers. The UK's annual VAT-based contribution to the European budget is reduced according to a formula first set out in the Fontainebleau Agreement. This reduction is equal to 66 % of the difference between what the UK pay for the EC budget and the receipts, which the UK gets back. But, the rebate applies only as for spending within the EU and the British contribution is calculated as if the budget were financed only by VAT. The European Commission is responsible for determining and calculating the amount of the UK's abatement. It is generally calculated...

According to the recent speeches of David Cameron and some other European politicians, multiculturalism has failed and it is necessary to make significant changes in immigration and integration policies. In Canada, however, multiculturalism is still a state policy, which is widely supported by the general public. The bachelor's thesis Multiculturalism in crisis? Rhetoric vs. policy changes in the new century (cases of Canada and the United Kingdom) is trying to answer a question if the critical rhetoric of British politicians has triggered real policy changes towards ethnic minorities and immigrants or if it only follows the changes that were started before they came to power. In Canada, the thesis is trying to learn, if the rhetoric supporting multiculturalism does not omit some policy changes, that would be in contradiction towards the original idea of multiculturalism. The author claims that multiculturalism in Canada has much deeper roots than in the UK and that the Canadian model differs signifiantly from the one in Britain.
